The Rotary Club of Forked River lost a friend and long time Rotarian on Tuesday December 13th.
William S. Whitson was a long time member of the Forked River Rotary and the recipient of 5 Paul Harris Awards for service to Rotary and our community. Although Bill worked extensively with many Rotary community projects, his most ardent campaign was to provide full Thanksgiving dinners to the needy families in Lacey Township, New Jersey. With Bill at the lead and working closely with the food bank, other community partners and his fellow Rotarians this program was responsible for providing full Thanksgiving dinners to thousands of people over the years.
William Stuart Whitson was born in Lakewood NJ to Edna Scott Whitson and William Warren Whitson, younger brother of David Christie Whitson. Mr. Whitson is survived by his loving wife Susie (Sally Anne Bitzer), daughter Dawn Whitson Davis, son William Scott Whitson, and granddaughters Emily Anne Whitson and Sarah Scott Whitson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
Mr. Whitson attended Toms River High School and graduated from Morristown School in 1954. He served his country as a Gunner and Heavy Weapons Infantryman in the New Jersey National Guard from 1956-1962. Mr. Whitson worked for Vernon Bitzer Associates, currently of Warminster PA, starting his career as a clerk and retiring as Vice President.
Growing up in Toms River NJ, Mr. Whitson developed a zest for the outdoors, learning sailing from his brother and hunting and fishing from his father, all of which remained life long passions. He enjoyed camping, family time in the mountains, and scuba diving with his family. Mr. Whitson derived great pleasure from being able to assist others and was an active member of the Forked River Rotary Club, working extensively with several community service programs. He was the recipient of 5 Paul Harris Awards for service to Rotary.
Services will be held at 12PM on 12/28/16 at the Forked River Presbyterian Church, 131 N. Main Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Forked River Rotary Club.
Thank you to everyone in our community that has supported our events throughout the year. With your support of our fundraisers and events you helped make this years’ event our best ever. An event this large, to help so many, couldn't be pulled off without extra help. With the assistance of the LTHS Interact Club supplying some additional man and woman power to do the shopping, set up, and gift distribution in our Elf Store, Our club was able to help 160 families, which include around 380 children to experience the magic of Christmas this year! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas this holiday!
Rotary Club of Forked Annual Christmas Brunch 2016
Our club kicked off the holiday season with our annual Christmas brunch at the Captains Inn, the event was well attended as many Rotarians, family members and friends took part in the food and festivities. The event started with a wide selection of fruits and breakfast pastries, also need to mention the breakfast bar buffet set up by the inns staff. Children that attended were kept busy by Rob and Debra with a medley of Christmas Carols, Letters to send to Santa and goodie bags with holiday projects until the man in the red suit made his appearance. The best part of the day was seeing the smiling faces on all the children that day. Don’t forget it’s not too late to make a donation to our Elf Program! Thank you to Rob & Debra for a great event!
With the Thanksgiving meal bags distributed by the Rotary last Friday barely put away in the cupboard, the Forked River Rotarians set up post outside of the Walmart in Lanoka Harbor on very windy and cold
Saturday for their 2nd Annual Rotary Day of Giving Food Drive - a day geared to restocking the shelves of the Lacey Food Bank. In anticipation of another cold winter and a higher than ever amount of families needing help the Rotary Club of Forked River together with the Staff and Shoppers of WalMart pulled together and presented the Lacey Food Bank with more than 3000 lbs of shelf stable non-perishable groceries! More than last year's 2500 lbs of food! And not one expired can or box in the lot!!!! In addition to the food donations, shoppers dropped their change and their dollars in the collection jar....gifting the Food Bank with a $500 donation for the day!! But perhaps, even more important, this Day of Giving reinforces how all of us together, Rotarians, Walmart and the Shoppers who supported this program, can serve humanity simply by doing a little bit of good, right where we live! Thank You Rotary Club of Forked River Members, WalMart and WalMart Shoppers for your support of this Rotary effort to help those in our Lacey community who need it the most!
On Friday, November 18th from 9:00 -12:00, members of our club and 35 LTHS Interact club members distributed over 225 turkeys with all the trimmings, through the Lacey Food Bank at the town's community center. a special thank you to Walmart & Shop Rite for your support and donations to help families in our service community. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
