4th of July Flag Flying

On July 4th the Rotary Club of Forked River will continue their time honored tradition of placing out and taking in over 400 American flags along the main corridors of Lacey Rd. and Rt.9.  This event is maintained by all the hard working Rotarians in the Lacey Area and the local businesses that sponsor flags each year. If you are a local business along Lacey Rd. or Rt.9 and would like to sponsor American flags in the future please reach out to us via our Facebook page. We hope that the citizens of Lacey and all who travel through our town enjoy the wonderful display of patriotism this July 4th. **If you see us either placing out or taking in flags please move over on the highway. -Thank You.

It was another outstanding year of "Making A Difference" for our club under the guidance of President Linda Kostrowski. As a club we accomplished many of our goals and service projects throughout the year. Here are some pictures from last weeks' installation and awards dinner, recognizing many members of our club and their Presidential Awards at our annual dinner. We would also like to recognize award winners that were unable to attend last weeks' dinner. Also receiving "Dream Team Public Image Awards" were Ashley Hughes and Katie DeSantis for helping promote our club throughout our community and commitment to our club. Congratulations to Janice Hyer for receiving the club's "Distinguished Service Award" and a club "Paul Harris Fellow Award" for all your dedicated service to our club throughout the year. Thank you all club members for your dedication and service throughout the year. Lots of hands make light work! We're sure all members are looking forward to "Be The Inspiration" in our community next year!

There were plenty of activities and fun things for the kids to do including a bouncy house, arts and crafts with the Lacey Rec Dept and building a tool box or a window planter with our friends at Home Depot.  We had lots of vendors offering their pet services including groomers, veterinarians and dog sitting or training for your fur babies. Caporalepet supplied free samples of dog foods, pet jerky and biscuits for attendees dogs to try.  Congratulations to the winners of our dog competitions. There was a good selection of snacks and refreshments supplied by vendors in our food truck court. LTHS Interact Club/ Rotary Club of Forked River Annual Picnic
The weather forecasts weren't conducive to having our annual joint club picnic, but we were able to dodge the raindrops long enough to have this year's outing.  About 20 Interact Members and 20 Rotarians met at Gille Park to share some of their experiences, and enjoy a catered lunch in the picnic grove.  Members conversed and kept busy playing some yard games, coloring or just shooting the breeze.  The highlight was a trivia game brought by Heather Scanlon, which had club Rotarians trying to figure some of today's teenage slang and usage, and the Interactors matching company names to old products.  Each team had about 20 questions, and the Rotarians matched 8 of the slang terms, with the Interact Club only getting 2 correct.  Thank you Club Advisor Keena Frechette and to all the Interact members for another great year of " Service Above Self".

A few Forked River Rotarians and Tom Morrissey's staff met at Tom's house to assemble backpacks with some basic essentials for children in need at Ocean County CASA. #ServiceAboveSelf #PeopleofAction

GO TEAM GO! We kicked off 2018 by expanding our "Stuffed Suitcase" program to Ocean County NJ.  This expansion was made possible due to a generous grant from from the Rotary Club of Forked River and help from the offices of Morrissey & Associates LLC. Morrissey & Associates LLC received our backpacks, and stuffed them with toiletries and comfort items. They then distributed them to Ocean County CASA, and successfully served 39 children!

We are grateful for the initiative of Rotary Club of Forked River and Morrissey & Associates. Due to their efforts, we were able to expand our program to a new location, and help bring joy and care to#fostercare children-in-need!

The man from the North Pole and his Elves made a visit and brought some gifts for the younger ones.  We were entertained and had a sing-a-long of Christmas music performed by Sophia (Tony's granddaughter) on her violin and Marissa ( John's niece) on the organ. A good time was had by all. Great job by brunch committee chair Heather Scanlon and members of her committee.

Rotary Club of Forked River kicks off Elf Week 2017

All the Elves in our club began about a month or two ago putting together their plan to host our Annual ELF Gift Distribution. Last Friday, one of our Elf Groups began shopping and purchasing items at the Five Below in Manahawkin to stock our shelves for Saturday's gift distribution.   With the assistance of the LTHS Interact Club Elves and Member Elves we will complete our shopping at the local Walmart this Friday.  All the items that we purchased will be set up as a store for local Moms and Dads who are in need of assistance to actually do a little shopping for their children and spread some Christmas cheer.  This program is funded by the different fundraising events that our club holds throughout the year.  Thank you to all the people in our community that have supported our club's efforts, without your donations and support an event like this wouldn't be possible.

Rotary International Giving Tuesday
Stories | District 7030

You can start the holiday season on a charitable note by donating on Giving Tuesday, 28 November.

Why should Rotary be your charity of choice?

Because our 1.2 million members see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Here are six reasons to donate to Rotary.

1. We fight disease around the world

For decades, Rotary has been a leader in the battle against polio and has kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 in 1988 to only 15 cases so far this year. We’re closer than ever to ending this devastating disease.

Your impact will be even greater, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. All donations (up to $50 million) to end polio will be tripled, providing critical funding to our work to create a polio-free world.

2. We teach people to read

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults through mentoring, scholarships, teacher training, and access to learning opportunities.

3. We build peace

Each year, armed conflict and persecution displace, injure, or kill millions of people. More than 90 percent of them are civilians, and half are children.

Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.

4. We provide clean water, sanitation

The statistics are alarming. Worldwide, one person in every 10 does not have access to safe water, and 2.3 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. One consequence: 900 children under age five die each day from diarrheal diseases.

Having clean water and sanitation is a human right. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives. Rotary is helping to make clean water available to everyone by 2030.

5. We grow local economies

Nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. Rotary is working to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders.

We know that one solution doesn’t fit every problem, so we work with people to help them help themselves.

We help Tanzanians with albinism find safe, healthy livelihoods. In Ecuador, Rotary has made 250 microloans and trained more than 270 people in job skills and business management. In Arkansas, USA, we worked with Heifer International to extend the growing season for farmers and help them find new customers.

6. We save mothers and children

An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation. More than 800 women die every day from birth- and pregnancy-related complications.

Rotary is saving lives by supplying birthing kits, immunizations, neonatal care equipment, and medical training.

With access to quality care, mothers and children live longer and healthier lives, and Rotary is providing that care.

Our service project committee put together 2 great days of service in our community.  On Friday the 17th, members of our club in conjunction with the Lacey Food Bank, and the LTHS Interact Club distributed 190 turkeys and the fixins’ for families in need in our community.  George Smith and his crew at Walmart in Lanoka Harbor provided the turkeys and Shop Rite helped provide the sides so that families in our community could enjoy a nice family Thanksgiving dinner.  Thank you to Manhattan Bagel in town for handling our lunch order.
On Saturday things started off a little chilly, as it was 20 degrees, club members and some Interact Club members manned our collection bin for non perishable food items to help stock the shelves for the Lacey Food Bank for the upcoming winter months.  It didn’t take long for the chill to subside, as we had many members of our community making food and cash donations to warm up our hearts, and fill the Food Bank shelves.  Thanks to the generosity of the people of Lacey we were able to fill up the Food Bank van 3 times and collected close to a $1,000 in monetary donations.

Rotarians out and about at the Knights of Columbus Father Capodanno Council #6522 Pasta Night Fundraiser.  A bunch of members from our club attended the Pasta Night Dinner for the local Knights of Columbus.  It was a fun evening of fun, food and laughs.  There was plenty to eat and and drink as can be seen in the pictures.  Our own William Recevuto won the 50/50 raffle and promptly donated the winnings back to the Knights.  Judy Ryan from our club was also the winner of the basket of wine raffle.

2017 Apple Festival/Lacey Day - Day of Service

It wasn’t a 105 degrees in the shade this year, so it felt much more like fall, but it seemed like attendance at the event was much higher. There were plenty of activities to keep the kids busy.  Forked River Fire Company provided fire truck rides for the kids. There were rock painting stations for “Lacey Township Rocks” on Facebook.  Lots of vendors with tables for their businesses or selling their crafts.  Lots of apple events including an apple pie eating contest, apple pies, candy apples to be purchased.  As a group our club distributed over 3,000 sub sandwiches, chips and water to the attendees.   This year we once again set up our Shelter Box display to show that Rotarians are “People of Action” to show the community some of the relief efforts we help to provide when disasters strike in the US and Internationally.  Thank you to all the sponsors that made this year’s festival a great success.

District 7500 Service Event-Rise Against Hunger

OUR MISSION

Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources.

OUR HISTORY

In 1998, envisioning a world without hunger, Ray Buchanan — a United Methodist minister — founded Stop Hunger Now. In 2017, Stop Hunger Now rebranded to become Rise Against Hunger. After enlisting as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War, Ray Buchanan quickly recognized that accomplishing a mission required “commitment to something larger than yourself.”

Driving Rise Against Hunger’s work is the recognition that ending hunger is more than just feeding people, which led Rise Against Hunger to focus its feeding programs in areas where we can have a real impact and expand its hunger-fighting programs beyond meal packaging and distribution.

OUR WORK

Our organization’s approach to ending hunger centers on mobilizing a global network of hunger champions. Rise Against Hunger meal packaging volunteers produce millions of nutritious meals annually that are then distributed to partners in countries around the world. Those partners are best able to address the causes and effects of hunger based on their local presence and expertise. Through our thorough monitoring and evaluation process, we ensure the meals distributed by those partners are used as a tool to change lives by promoting education, improving students’ health and nutrition, addressing gender inequalities, stimulating economic growth and fighting child labor.

Another core focus of Rise Against Hunger is responding to crises–both natural and man-made. From droughts to floods, in conflict zones and transitioning political situations, food is often the most immediate need. When everyday access to food, wages, and market systems are destroyed in the wake of emergencies, Rise Against Hunger works through a network of in-country partners to address these needs. We strive to ensure aid is efficiently and effectively deployed to and received by communities when it is needed most.

Our third approach to eradicating hunger centers around grassroots community empowerment. Rise Against Hunger bolsters agricultural production and incomes through programs promoting improved agricultural methods, business skills, and market access. With training and access to quality seeds and fertilizers, farmers can increase production and harvest a variety of nutritious crops. By supporting the establishment of fish and livestock production, we also provide pathways to diversifying diets and improving nutritional outcomes.

Rotary Club of Forked River Welcomes 2 New Members

Congratulations to Drew Ritchie and Linda Phillips on becoming Rotarians at last week’s lunch meeting.  Drew’s sponsor was Dr. Tom McGillick and completing the induction ceremony was one of our club’s founders, Past District Governor, and Grandpa to Drew our own Dick Ritchie.  Drew was born and raised in Lacey, he works at Lacey Auto Care and is a Realtor at REMax working with George Broome’s group.  In his spare time Drew like the outdoors camping and canoeing.  He’s looking forward to using the 4 Way Test in all that he does.
Linda Phillips knows and is a friend of Don Bochicchio from his days in education and has sponsored her to become a member.  Linda was born and raised in Monmouth County and received her bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, she went on to receive her Masters in Educational leadership from Monmouth University.  She has also worked in Banking, before deciding the Education was her true calling.  Linda was the principal at The Education Academy in Lanoka Harbor, before becoming an owner and director of the business.  Her pride and joy and crowning achievements are her family.  She hopes that becoming a Rotarian will allow her to work with community members to educate, remediate, and foster positive changes through volunteering and creating events in the Lacey community.
Great to have new members, welcome to our club!!!

We had a full house at this year's event at the Cedar Creek Campground.  Registration for the tournaments started at 2:00, with the competitions beginning at 3:00.  While waiting for the tournament to begin, entrants could build up their checker stamina by feasting at the fabulous hot dog buffet or clear their mind by taking a dip in the olympic size pool.  As you can see by the pictures these checker players take the game seriously, look at the determination and concentration on their faces.  We also had a special dessert, hope everyone got a piece of the tournament cake.
