Rotary Club of Forked River Welcomes 2 New Members

Congratulations to Drew Ritchie and Linda Phillips on becoming Rotarians at last week’s lunch meeting.  Drew’s sponsor was Dr. Tom McGillick and completing the induction ceremony was one of our club’s founders, Past District Governor, and Grandpa to Drew our own Dick Ritchie.  Drew was born and raised in Lacey, he works at Lacey Auto Care and is a Realtor at REMax working with George Broome’s group.  In his spare time Drew like the outdoors camping and canoeing.  He’s looking forward to using the 4 Way Test in all that he does.
Linda Phillips knows and is a friend of Don Bochicchio from his days in education and has sponsored her to become a member.  Linda was born and raised in Monmouth County and received her bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, she went on to receive her Masters in Educational leadership from Monmouth University.  She has also worked in Banking, before deciding the Education was her true calling.  Linda was the principal at The Education Academy in Lanoka Harbor, before becoming an owner and director of the business.  Her pride and joy and crowning achievements are her family.  She hopes that becoming a Rotarian will allow her to work with community members to educate, remediate, and foster positive changes through volunteering and creating events in the Lacey community.
Great to have new members, welcome to our club!!!

Last Tuesday some members of our club completed the bottling of their wine, which started back in February. 1500 lbs of Sangiovese grapes were deseeded and destemmed and put into a barrel to ferment.  These grapes are from Italy’s Tuscany region, and are used in making Chianti’s and Cabernet’s.   Latin translation for sangiovese is “The Blood of Jupiter”, the King of all gods in Roman mythology. After fermentation the mix was clarified, then put into a barrel to age.  Bottling was a 4 step process.  First you fill the bottle with wine, then insert your cork, then heat seal with a cap, finish with your own designed label. 24 cases of wine were bottled by members.
Salute! Chin-Chin!

We had a full house at this year's event at the Cedar Creek Campground.  Registration for the tournaments started at 2:00, with the competitions beginning at 3:00.  While waiting for the tournament to begin, entrants could build up their checker stamina by feasting at the fabulous hot dog buffet or clear their mind by taking a dip in the olympic size pool.  As you can see by the pictures these checker players take the game seriously, look at the determination and concentration on their faces.  We also had a special dessert, hope everyone got a piece of the tournament cake.

Congratulations to all the participants and below is a list of this year's Winners and Runner Ups:

Ages 5-9 Champion- Jonathan Price and Runner Up- Keaghan Dellolio
Ages 10-13 Champion- Coda Mearizo and Runner Up- Jace Polony

Thank You from Last Year's Rotary Scholarship Winner- Kayla Sansevere
Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, mountain, outdoor, nature and closeup

To whom it may concern, my name is Kayla Sansevere and I was fortunate enough to receive a generous, annual scholarship from the Forked River Rotary Club as a member of the Lacey Township High School graduating class of 2016. I wanted to send the Rotary Club an update on how my studies are going, and how the scholarship has benefited me. I currently attend Arcadia University as a rising sophomore with a major in Psychology and minor in Spanish. In Fall 2016, my first semester of university, I was able to study abroad in Stirling, Scotland--an experience I hold close to my heart and immensely cherish. While adjusting to a new country's culture, I succeeded not only in achieving a 3.3 GPA, but also discovering a place I call "home". Upon my arrival at Arcadia in January 2017, I again found myself adjusting to an unfamiliar place with a deep sadness of leaving the life I had created for myself in Scotland. Regardless, I was able to finish my spring semester with a 4.0 GPA. I also became heavily involved in my university's community, as I am now an Orientation Leader, First-Year Study Abroad Experience mentor, and Teacher's Assistant. In the fall, I will begin both my own research opportunities and assists professors in their research. I am also taking 20 credits while maintaining a work-study position. As for this summer, I am working a part-time job and participating as a hospice volunteer, where I comfort individuals with care and compassion in their last living days. I am thankful the Rotary Club awarded me with such a generous scholarship, as it assists me in achieving the various goals I create and allows me to take advantage of every opportunity. I truly feel as if I am able to embody the Rotary Club's guiding principles of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership, in all future endeavors and achievements. I hope you are able to share this message with fellow Rotarians whenever possible. Thank you, again!

Several 50/50 winners were called while we waited, serving only to heighten the anticipation of the crowd. At precisely the stroke of 10pm, the ticket barrel was spun! The 5th Annual Rotary Club of Forked River Doggie Derby was a howling success!!! Man's best friend was celebrated at this Hometown Family Event with canine demonstrations and competitions, vendors and food, music, rescues and activities for the young, the not so young and all our furry friends. It was a day that brought us together to celebrate all our furbabies and to benefit the many charitable contributions the Rotary Club of Forked River continues to make to our community and our citizens. For those dog owners that had your picture taken by our photographer, details will be forthcoming how you can download your photo and help by contributing to the Rotary Club of Forked River.  Thank you all that helped make this great event possible!  See you next year!
