Who is Paul Harris

Paul Harris history (from Rotary.org)

After setting up his law practice in Chicago, Paul Harris gathered several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals.

On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting.

“I was sure that there must be many other young men who had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in Chicago ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing for fellowship as I was, something would come of it.”

In February 1907, Harris was elected the third president of the Rotary Club of Chicago, a position he held until the fall of 1908. Toward the end of his club presidency, Harris worked to expand Rotary beyond Chicago. Some club members resisted, not wanting to take on the additional financial burden. But Harris persisted and by 1910 Rotary had expanded to several other major U.S. cities.

Harris died on 27 January 1947 in Chicago at age 78 after a prolonged illness.

His death prompted an outpouring of contributions from around the world and his name continues to evoke the passion and support of Rotarians and friends of Rotary.

Rotary Friendship Exchange

Experience different cultures and build international friendships through Rotary Friendship Exchange (from rotary.org)

What is Friendship Exchange?

Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotary members and friends that allows participants to take turns hosting one another in their homes and clubs.

Participants may travel as individuals, couples, families, or groups, and may be Rotary members or not.

Benefits of an exchange

  • Broaden international understanding
  • Explore a profession or job in a different context
  • Build enduring friendships
  • Establish a foundation for peace and service
  • Gain opportunities for active project involvement and support
  • Learn about a region’s people, food, languages, customs, and history
  • Find partners for grants

Choose a destination

Explore our Exchange Finder Map to view current exchange locations and the districts that serve them. Connect with the district’s Rotary Friendship Exchange chair for help finding potential international hosts and planning your itinerary.

Define your purpose

Friendship exchanges are organized around at least one of three themes: culture, service, and vocation.

Fund your exchange

All exchanges are paid for by the participants or their districts. Hosts are not expected to assume a significant financial burden. Club or district funds may be available to offset the costs of exchanges that have a vocational emphasis.

Share your story

After your trip, submit a report to your district, as well as to rotary.service@rotary.org. It’s your chance to tell us about your experience, make suggestions, and share what you learned.

Annual Rotary Christmas Brunch 2019

On Sunday December 8th, The Rotary Club of Forked River held its Annual Christmas Brunch at the Captains Inn. It was a lot of fun and a great time to be filled with the holiday spirit for all members and their families. We started the day off with a few reindeer games to build up our appetites, then feasted on a great brunch buffet.  We also had a Christmas carol sing-a-long, followed by a visit by Santa Clause himself. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas season.
Rotary Elf Program 2019!
It’s a wrap! The Annual Club ELF Gift Distribution Project was held on Saturday December 7th.   It started on Friday at 7:00 AM, with club members and members of the LTHS Interact Club purchasing gifts at the local Walmart. Gifts purchased at the local Walmart and other stores were then transported to our store for those less fortunate to shop for gifts for their children for Christmas. Each shopper was matched up with a personal shopper to fill their sacks with gifts from gift categories including hats, scarves and glove sets, reading books, activity toys, arts and crafts, sporting equipment and a large toy for each child to put under under their trees this Christmas. Thank you to everyone in our community who supported our club throughout the year to bring smiles to kids faces on Christmas morning. Without your support and generous donations this annual event wouldn’t be possible. Here’s a quote we’d like to share from Winston Churchill this holiday season-
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Wishing everyone and your families a Merry Christmas!
